Dr. Bolong Huang received Ph.D. in 2012 from University of Cambridge, and he obtained B.Sc. in condensed matter physics from Department of Physics, Peking University 2007. Following a systematic training period as research assistant in Chemistry Department in Peking University, and in Hong Kong, he was starting-up his independent research as PI in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2015. His main research fields are DFT calculations on rare earth functional nanomaterials, defect theory of solid functional nanomaterials, DFT calculation development based on abinitio electronic self-energy corrections, and semicore orbital corrections as an implement in time-dependent DFT theory.

Research Interests

  1. Theoretical calculations with exact electronic self-energy corrections on local orbital electrons in rare-earth materials.
  2. Electronic structure and regulations of solid state functional materials.
  3. Inverse-designing and searching for new generation renewable energy materials for property modulations and rare-earth modification.

Ms. Mingzi Sun was born in Henan, China 1990. She studied chemistry at Sun-Yat Sen University (B.S. 2012) and received her master degree in material science from University of Rochester (M.S. 2014). She started working as R&D engineer in a carbon nanotube production company for two years. Presently, she is a Ph.D. student working with Dr. Bolong Huang at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and her research interest is on the investigation of novel energy conversions of nanomaterials through DFT calculation methods.

Ms. LU Lu was born in Hubei province, China, in the year 1988. She was majored in chemistry at Shanxi Normal University and awarded her bachelor’ degree (Double Degree in English) in 2011. After three years, she graduated from Southwest University and received her master’s degree in physical chemistry. Then, she started working as a primary school teacher teaching science and PE class for four years. In present, she is an M.Phil. Student under supervision of Dr. Bolong Huang at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and her research orientation is DFT calculations on rare earth functional nanomaterials.

Alan William Dougherty was born in London, U.K. and received the Ph.D degree in Pattern recognition and Machine intelligence from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in 2019 and the MEng degree in electronic engineering from King’s College London, U.K., in 2013. His research interests include computer vision, health informatics, computational modelling and machine learning.

Mr. Tong Wu finished his bachelor degree in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2018, and has been working as a research assistant in Dr. Huang’s group after graduation. His current research interest is studying oxygen reduction reaction with DFT calculations. Besides doing research, he has developed many hobbies such as photography, coffee and graphic design. He became interested in photography at the age of 13 and he had my photographs posted three times on a local newspaper in Guangzhou when I was in high school. Learning photography and design shapes his aesthetics, teach him to be acutely observant in daily life and help him keep passionate towards life and challenge. His dream is to be the best photographer among chemists, and the best chemist among photographers.

Ms. Qiuyang LU, born in 1991 in Jiangsu, China, studied biomedical engineering at Tianjin University (B.S. 2014) and received her master degree in the same subject from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (M.S. 2017) on quantitative ultrasound with Dr. Lei Sun. Now she is working with Dr. Bolong Huang at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a research associate and her current research interest is on the images analysis about luminescence materials and electrification by Matlab simulations.
